Celebrated American wine critic Jeb Dunnuck retasted Château Léoville Poyferré 2018 in March 2021 and attributed the maximum score of 100/100.
In November 2021, Jeb Dunnuck unveiled his ranking of the 100 best wines in the world. We are very proud to discover that our 2018 vintage is in 1st place in this ranking!
What a wonderful accolade for this vintage of extreme weather conditions, wildly rocked between alternating periods of humidity and dryness. At the heart of the emblematic graves of Saint-Julien, the vine was able to show us, once again, the magical effect of terroir. From this extraordinary equation is born a vintage that sings harmoniously with elegance, complexity and balance.

Located in the prestigious appellation of Saint Julien, the 58-hectare vineyard of Château Léoville Poyferré benefits from the diversity of an exceptional terroir. Composed of several plots in different locations, the sandy-gravelly soils and microclimate along the estuary bestow the wines with aromatic complexity.
Respectful cultivation and sustainable practices in the vineyard are the guiding principles of our estate. Organic soil amendments, the elimination of herbicides, and carefully adapted pest control help to preserve the microbiological balance of the soil. Following the advice of Michel Rolland, the grapes are harvested at optimum technological and phenolic ripeness, thus allowing them to express their full potential.
The extensive vineyard plantation and restructuration program undertaken with the arrival of Didier Cuvelier came to a close in 1998. The renovation and extension of the vat house in the 1990’s was followed by another partial renovation in 2010, when truncated conical-shaped vats were installed. These new double-walled vats enable pre-fermentation cold macerations, gently extracting the purest fruit aromas and intense color. In 2011, the acquisition of a state-of-the-art optical sorting machine further refined the precision of berry sorting. The wine is aged in 80% new French oak barrels, racked every three months, and fined with egg whites. In essence, a clever mix of innovation and tradition brings out the character of our terroir.
