With wide ranges in temperature and rainfall, 2012 was a challenging year for the vineyard. After favorable conditions returned mid-July, this vintage, though off to an early start, proved to be late in reaching its optimum maturity beginning on 8th October.
Tasting after tasting, 2012 never ceases to amaze and charm us.
Press review:
Primeurs tv – Andreas Larsson 95
Pure, intense and floral with notes of bitter chocolate and dark berries, cassis, blackberry, good balance between juice and extract, ripe tannin, very good purity, definition and length, a great wine with classic elegance and unctuous fruit.
Wine Spectator – James Molesworth 90 – 93
Solid, with good flesh around the core of plum and blackberry fruit. Shows ample dark toast and ganache notes, displaying chewy yet integrated grip.
Robert Parker – Wine Advocate: 89-91Pts

Located in the prestigious appellation of Saint Julien, the 58-hectare vineyard of Château Léoville Poyferré benefits from the diversity of an exceptional terroir. Composed of several plots in different locations, the sandy-gravelly soils and microclimate along the estuary bestow the wines with aromatic complexity.
Respectful cultivation and sustainable practices in the vineyard are the guiding principles of our estate. Organic soil amendments, the elimination of herbicides, and carefully adapted pest control help to preserve the microbiological balance of the soil. Following the advice of Michel Rolland, the grapes are harvested at optimum technological and phenolic ripeness, thus allowing them to express their full potential.
The extensive vineyard plantation and restructuration program undertaken with the arrival of Didier Cuvelier came to a close in 1998. The renovation and extension of the vat house in the 1990’s was followed by another partial renovation in 2010, when truncated conical-shaped vats were installed. These new double-walled vats enable pre-fermentation cold macerations, gently extracting the purest fruit aromas and intense color. In 2011, the acquisition of a state-of-the-art optical sorting machine further refined the precision of berry sorting. The wine is aged in 80% new French oak barrels, racked every three months, and fined with egg whites. In essence, a clever mix of innovation and tradition brings out the character of our terroir.
